Yaroslavl

See also: the next report (November 2023).

Yaroslavl is arguably one of the best weekend destination from Moscow. I've already been there for more than 10 times so I just lazily looked for the elusive details.

The sign "Strengthen the Defense of the Soviet Union" on the building on the main pedestrian Kirova street. In 1930s such signs were awarded for the house dwellers for one year if they scored a good mark during physical training programme. If they failed next year the sign should have been torn off and given to another apartment building. Most of these signs fell apart, but some survived and were even painted.

The grandiose bell tower of the Nativity church (1644).

Crack control beacons on the church's wall.

Dome church with a metal plowshare.

Getting in (as of February 2023): M8 highway from Moscow by car (from 4 to 6 hours depending of traffic). The fastest way to get to Yaroslavl is the train from the eponymous terminus in Moscow.

Where to eat: The Mili restaurant near the main train station (be sure to order the soup with a special serving). Best coffee shop is "Prosto coffee" on Trefoleva street.

What to buy: local cheese in the Syrnaya birzha shop on Pervomayska street.
