Kukoboi

A village with a weird name in Yaroslavl oblast. In early 1900s one local merchant who became rich in St. Petersburg, offered his fellow villagers a choice: to build a railway to a nearest town or a magnificent temple. They chose a temple. The Church of the Savior Not Made by Hands in Russian style turned out to be very impressive.

The temple was consecrated in 1912 and already in 1918 it was closed by communists and gutted. The wall paintings peeled off themselves.

White facing brick was brought from Finland and laid out in two rows. After more than a hundred years of neglect, it crumbled only partially.

Nearby stands another church, Assumption (1836). Or what was left of it after it was converted into a warehouse.

Getting in (as of February 2023): take a right turn from M8 highway between Vologda and Gryazovets. The local road is fairly decent.
