Kolomna

One of the favorite spots for a weekend trip from Moscow. Kolomna was founded at about the same time as the capital, there is also a Kremlin here. More precisely, its surviving fragments.

It has a compact and cozy town center.

Temples.

Former silk factory converted into lofts.

The Church of the Conception of John the Baptist in Gorodishche (beginning of the 14th century) is the oldest temple in Kolomna, but located on the outskirts, where few people get to.

Bobrenev monastery, which can be reached by a pontoon bridge across the Moscow River. Nothing to see inside, but it has peculiar towers.

View from the monastery to the city center.

Houses near the monastery.

Kolomna has a comprehensive tram system with a relatively new rolling stock (not very advanced though).

The cat is forced to wait for the stupid humans to let her into the tram control room.

Getting in (as of March 2023): M5 highway from Moscow is prone to congestion. Trains from Kazansky terminal in Moscow are frequent and much faster.

Where to stay: Kolomna hotel is the biggest hotel in town, most others are small boutique hotels with no spare rooms in weeks in advance.

Where to eat: the Rulki Vverkh restaurant serves excellent ham hocks. But be sure to book a table. Traditional kalach bread with various fillings or without them are sold near Pyatnitskaya tower.

What to buy: local confectionery like pastila.
