Vologda

A city in North-Western Russia famous for its wood carvings. Really lots of this stuff.

The river of the same name flows through Vologda. In winter, it freezes tightly and you can see the Brueghel inspired scenery.

But sometimes Russian winter looks unappealing.

Few old churches.

Details on the Church of the Assumption in Zarechye seem to be drawn in ink.

Lots of beautiful 19th century mansions.

And even more abandoned ones like this former almshouse built in late 18th century by a local merchant Nikolay Skulyabin.

School kids wallowing in idleness and going to vandalize the building even more.

Original facade cladding. I hope the owner is at least warm.

Vologda cats.

Vologda stickers.

Getting in (as of February 2023): the fastest way will be by air, however Vologda airport is old and doesn't serve modern planes. So flights to Cherepovets might be a better option. Sleeper trains are available. Also one can take a car from Moscow via Yaroslavl but the road will be tiresome.

Where to eat: The Parovozov restaurant. The beverages will be delivered to you table with a toy train.
