Balashikha, Pekhra-Yakovlevskoye

Balashikha is a very large and shapeless city east of Moscow, consisting of dozens of microdistricts, exclaves and industrial zones. Its city-forming center was the cotton spinning factory on the banks of the Pekhorka, the owners of which in pre-revolutionary times were the merchants Shelaputins.

The factory has not been operating for a long time and is slowly turning into a hipster shed.

The main part of the territory is now open. You can look at the water towers and cast iron balconies.

There are also a few houses for engineers, worker barracks and a factory clinic.

Shelaputin almshouse (1913), now a private school. From the main facade it is hidden behind foliage and a fence.

Monuments of Soviet times.

On the other side of the Vladimirsky tract (Enthuziastov Highway) you can look at the Pehra-Yakovlevskoye estate, which was owned by the Golitsyns in the 18th century. Until recently, it was occupied by an agricultural distance education university, which brought the buildings to a state of complete disarray, so all the students were evicted. The main house was rebuilt beyond recognition after a fire in 1924.

The best preserved are the side wings with two colonnades.

The colonnades are good, from below they look like a monorail line.

A verse on the column: "If you smoke a lot, you will die under the same president under whom you started smoking".

Collapsed learning campus.

Stone staircase with sphinxes opposite the main house.

The sphinxes are not feeling well.

Former estate arena theater.

Cheerful lions at the entrance. Previously, they were on the same staircase as the sphinxes.

The Cathedral of the Transfiguration of the Lord (1777-1783) is the only completely restored building of the estate. Unfortunately, it is densely packed with modern auxillary buildings, so it is impossible to photograph it properly.

Getting in (as of July 2023): the direct trains from Kursky railway station in Moscow will terminate not far away from the historical center of Balashikha. Getting to Pekhra-Yakovlevskoe without a car can be tricky.
