Znamensk

A village in Kaliningrad oblast near Gvardeysk. It is interesting by itself, but there were only enough time for a swift twilight tour over former Allenberg psychiatric hospital. The complex was opened in 1852 and expanded several times. In 1940, all patients were sent to concentration camps and killed. Since 1945, Allenberg hosted the Soviet and then the Russian military units. They relocated to Gvardeysk 10 years ago, leaving the former psychiatric hospital for looting.

Local kids persistently offer a tour at the entrance. It is better to give them a hundred rubles ($2) and politely ask them to get out of sight. You may not pay, it is up to you, but the kid gang is rather big and here are plenty of bricks that can accidentally fall...

The boy got his 100 rubles bill and coming inside the ward.

The main attraction is the central building with a tower.

Other buildings.

Young men and women to the right are going to have a night "doctors & patients" party all over the former hospital.

Soviet military graffiti.

The hospital used to be a barracks of an anti-aircraft missile brigade. This roster says that they successfully shot dozens of target drones during exercises since 1967 mostly with "excellent" marks. The last exercise was held in 2011, they got "good" mark and were disbanded.

Getting in (as of September 2022): 45 minutes car ride from Kaliningrad. Many buses from Kaliningrad will carry you straight to the Allenberg.
