Gusev

A town in Kaliningrad oblast, former German Gumbinnen (rare occasion when the new Russian name coincided at least with two first letters with the old German). Old district administration building (1912) faces the new Russian Orthodox All Saints Church (2016). The latter was built on the site of Lutheran church destroyed in WWII.

There town is not particularly big. Few streets with the rows of old German houses remain.

German neogothic gymnasium (1903) now used as a college.

The Red-yellow-blue flag to the right is a flag of Kaliningrad oblast. The college had been a voting site on the 2022 gubernatorial elections.

Former casinos: one for military officers (now a museum).

And the second is for civilians.

Unfortunately abandoned bank building.

A moose is a town symbol.

Garrison concert hall with nice details.

Various houses.

Doors.

A moth caterpillar.

Details.

Cats.

Getting in (as of September 2022): 1 hour 40 minutes ride from Kaliningrad. In summer, when the daytime is long, Gusev can be combined by a car trip with Chernyakhovsk and Gvardeysk. Bus ride will take at least 2 hours 10 minutes. Train service is nearly suspended.
