Volokolamsk is an old Russian town founded in 12th century. It was heavily bombed during WWII but luckily the site of old Kremlin with two old temples survived.
I've been here few times, so I just checked the eastern neighborhoods along the Sovetskaya street.
The old Soviet sign with the red flag says: "The housing stock is a public asset. This house is perfectly maintained".
The symbol of the special military operation in Ukraine was used here long before 2022.
Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It was built in 1535, but was rebuilt a lot. Doesn't look old at all.
A cat near the church.
A park with a short name "Park" on the outskirts of the city in the valley of the Gorodnya River.
Getting in (as of May 2022): drive the direct M-9 highway from Moscow or take the suburban train (electrichka) terminating in Volokolamsk, Shakhovskaya or Muravyevo. Train station is far from the town center.
Where to stay: there is even one four-star hotel here, but I would be squeamish to use it.
Where to eat: "Vkusno i tochka" (former McDonald's).
What to buy: there is a small souvenir shop in the Kremlin.
