Velikiye Luki

The town was bombed to oblivion during the WWII. After the liberation from nazis in 1944 it became a center of Velikiye Luki oblast and enjoyed some monumental construction efforts during late 1940s - early 1950s.

Soon after Stalin's death the oblast was abolished and Velikiye Luki remains the second largest town in Pskov olbast on Lovat' river.

There are a few old houses of the 19th century that accidentally survived the war.

Even the cathedral (1768) has been preserved. However, during redevelopment, it ended up inside the quarter.

Dinopark in the town center. All those figures can roar or move their heads and tails if passing nearby.

Real grapes grow on walls.

Only now I realized that the holes in the stamped car rims are needed to make it more convenient for the cats to inspect the wheels.

Getting in (as of July 2022): E95/P-23 highway from Pskov or Moscow. Expect a very long and exhausting ride. Also you can take a night train from Moscow or Saint Petersburg.

Where to eat: Vkusno i Tochka (former McDonalds) restaurant.
