Venyov

A small town in Tula oblast heavily damaged in WWII. Until recently, the main high-rise dominant of Venyyov, the bell tower of St. Nicholas Cathedral (1862), was abandoned. It was restored in 2022.

Both Venyov's Lenins are admiring the bell tower.

A park around the bell tower.

Church of the Intercession (1737) is still abandoned.

The oldest civil building preserved in the entire Tula region (XVII century) houses the local museum.

Former school

Other buildings in the downtown.

A toad is painted on the side facade of the building of the Society of Hunters and Fishermen.

The local speciality is Venyovka, a sweet pastry in the shape of the letter "B" (pronounced as "V" in Russian). I bet it was invented few years ago and no one heard about any Venyovkas before.

Getting in (as of October 2022): M4 highway from Moscow, fast buses available.

What to buy: Venyovka (even though has no real history).

Stay safe: we've noticed a dog with rabies dripping saliva in the very city center. Such indifference seems surprising even in Russia, so beware of the local animals.
