Yuryevets

Yuryevets is perhaps the most inaccessible city in Ivanovo Oblast. The huge body of water is the Volga river, more precisely, the Gorky reservoir.

Small park on the embankment.

The central square with three churches and a slightly leaning bell tower without a cross on top. It was torn down by a hurricane in 2021.

The condition of the classicist Assumption Cathedral (1825) is eloquently evidenced by warnings about rockfall.

The Old Cathedral of the Entrance to Jerusalem (1733) is being actively repaired.

Temporary wooden dome.

Obligatory Lenin's monument on the Central square.

Unlike most towns on the Volga river Yuryevets doesn't have a marina for cruise ships. Hence the tourism industry is inexistent no money is available to restore the vast amount of abandoned old houses.

Rockfall is actually a common sight.

Many wooden barrack-type apartment buildings.

An old Soviet metal pennant with the inscription "House of Good Sanitary Condition". Apparently, the sanitary condition in other houses was not very good.

Former women's high school with a generic WWII monument in front of it.

And an integrated church in the back.

Restored brewery now used as apartments.

Museum of Vesnin brothers who were the leaders of Constructivist architecture.

And another museum of Arseny Tarkovsky who was a Soviet poet and a father of film director Andrei Tarkovsky.

Abandoned mechanized bakery on the Sovetskaya street. In Soviet times, instead of small private bakeries, they made one big bakery for the whole town.

In fact, the bakery is a rebuilt former temple of the Beheading of John the Baptist. You can climb inside.

The deposit of the letters "Z" and "V" next to the building of the male gymnasium.

Cozy Engels street with the Church of the Epiphany built in early 18th century.

Guardian dog.

Cats of Yuryevets.

And their trails.

Where to stay (as of May 2022): unfortunately no decent accommodation here.

Where to eat: cafe-bakery "Khleb-sol'" near the central market has a suspiciously low rating. Most likely you will not get poisoned, but this is not certain.

What to buy: The tourist portal of the Ivanovo oblast recommends the products of local craftsmen: embroidered towels, clay whistles and wood carvings. I am not an affiliated tourist portal, so I will not recommend anything.
