Izborsk

A village in Pskov oblast founded in 9th century, not much from that era remains. The stone fortress was constructed on a new place in 14th century.

Izborsk fortress was mercilessly renovated in early 2010s and lost some of its glory.

Restored Chemin de ronde.

However the restoration could have been worse.

For example, they did not dare restoring the insides of the towers.

Big Brother is watching.

The Nativity church within the fortress.

And even more interesting Church in the name of St. Sergius of Radonezh and Nikandr of Pskov which dates from 17th century - outside the fortress.

Gorodishenskoe lake as seen from the fortress walls.

Drinkable springs near the lake.

The springs are guarded by swans. Tourists who approach them without food become food themselves.

The rising generation of thugs.

The village near the castle.

Graveyard and a sign "The most delicious place of Izborsk".

An ugly Pskovian door of the local library.

The local dweller.

Getting in (as of July 2022): Direct road from Pskov, no parking near the fortress, leave the car on the big parking lot near the highway. Buses from Pskov run relatively often.

What to buy: Lots of souvenir stands near the fortress. Dried smelt is worth trying.
