旅人る - Tabibito

Villozi, Taytsy, Gatchina, Suida

Villozi

The small village to the south of St. Petersburg with an Ingrian Finnish name. Not long before the outbreak of WWI it was decided to build here a waterworks to supply a nearby military encampments in Krasnoye Selo. Nowadays even the locals don't remember the purpose of this building, thinking it is an Orthodox monastery or a Lutheran church.

Former boiler house. Now a cultural center.

Locals enjoy the new improved park.

But even more they are proud of their shaverma (kebab).

Taytsy

Another small village with a church built in 1916.

Gatchina

This town in Leningrad oblast has a magnificent palace built by emperor Paul I, its northern environs are usually skipped by visitors. Here you can see military barracks dating from 1870s.

Pacifist graffiti saying "You are important" with a small "no" added in black.

Commieblocks.

Suida

Another village with Ingrian name to the south of Gatchina. A curious wooden Church of the Resurrection of Christ was built here in 2000. A rare example when modern forms in church architecture do not look embarassing.

Where to eat (as of May 2022): shaverma in Villozi (just joking).

Where to stay: Gatchina may have some decent accommodation, but St. Petersburg looks more promising.

What to buy: a cringe souvenir plate with the views of Gatchina.
