Bagrationovsk

A small town in Kaliningrad oblast, formerly known as Preussisch-Eylau. Here in 1807 the bloody battle took place between the army of Napoleon and the allied forces of Prussia and Russia. Prince Pyotr Bagration then commanded the Russian rearguard and the town was renamed after him in 1946. A Germanmonument to this battle, erected by Germans in 1856, has been preserved on the outskirts. The monument is mere 1 kilometer from the state border with Poland, but Bagrationovsk is not included in the border zone, and no passes are required to visit it.

The Russians are mentioned on the monument as "brothers in arms".

A bas-relief with a portrait of general Bennigsen who commanded Russian troops in the battle.

In 1907 two anachronistic rifled artillery pieces from the 1870s were installed on the sides of the monument.

Monograms and inscriptions on the cannons.

Someone scratched a swastika on the breech of one of the cannons. The edges have worn off, so it could have happened before 1945.

A water tower built in 1913.

Unfortunately its top is in disrepair.

Preussisch-Eylau castle.

Recently there were several recovery attempts, but all of them failed. In October 2022 the whole castle was sold at the price of an average Moscow apartment.

View of the castle from the side of the pond in the city park.

A fake megalith at the entrance to the park.

The owner of the railway wagon and the old VW Golf dries his hedgehogs.

The most luxurious garage in the city.

There were no decent looking hydrants.

Details.

The railway towards Poland ends in a dead end. But the road crossing hasn't been dismantled. Just in case.

Getting in (as of September 2022): swift and easy ride from Kaliningrad. Bus service available.
