A large Orthodox monastery in the Leningrad region to the south-east of Ladoga lake. It consists of two parts: Trinity (eastern).
And Transfiguration (western).
The Trinity cathedral (1695-1697)
Its galleries.
The oldest building is the Intercession Church with a refectory (1533-1536).
Belfry (1646).
Needless to say, the paving and other improvements were done quite recently. Until the end of the 2000s, the monastery housed a mental hospital.
Transfiguration Cathedral (1641-1644), which houses the relics of the founder of the monastery, Alexander Svirsky. Well, or what they pass off as them, since in 1919, according to documents from the Russian Academy of Sciences, the historical remains of the abbot were destroyed, and the “miraculously found” mummy most likely belongs to a random criminal who died in the Gulag, as is hinted by cut off fingertips. But believers know better.
Picturesque Roshchinskoye Lake with a monastery.
Getting there (as of August 2023): about 3.5 hours ride from St. Petersburg by car.
Where to stay: "Tochka na karte" hotels in Lodeynoye Pole or Vidlitsa.
