A magnificent temple complex on Volga River in Tver oblast. Pogost means that this is a rural church situated at some distant place. No joking, the place is really off the beaten path.
Here stays a unique 45-meter wooden church of the Nativity of John the Baptist (1694). In the 1970s, it was restored to its almost original appearance, except that the roofs were covered with galvanized tin.
It is slightly eccentric.
Details.
The cupola.
The church is locked, and there is nothing inside.
For those who really want to pray, a stone church is open on weekends, it is also dedicated to the Nativity of John the Baptist (1913).
Volga river.
Road to Shirkov pogost. It does not seem to get wet and muddy in the rain, you can drive on any passenger car.
Small wooden bridge en route.
Forest roads.
Very clean forest along the way. There will be lots of berries at the end of summer for sure.
Pines hugging.
Forest lake.
Getting in (as of June 2022): 45 minutes drive from Ostashkov. There is no signage, use the online map. Half of the distance is unpaved but does not seem to get wet and muddy in the rain, so any car would deal with it. Public transit? Forget about it, the place is too deserted.
