Orenburg. Part I

A nice and well preserved city on the border of Europe and Asia. The border is marked by Ural river. Don't miss the occasion to traverse the transcontinental footbridge.

Or take the transcontinental ropeway (however it didn't run during our visit).

The most of the town is located on the European side.

The Asia looks empty and desolated.

Orenburg used to be a Russian fortress guarding the Kazakh steppes, the walls were dismantled in the mid-19th century. Only one tower remains included into the local museum on the Ural river's bank.

Pedestrian Sovetskaya street looks desolated early in the morning.

It seems that there are even more mosques in Orenburg than Orthodox churches.

Caravanserai (1844)

City administration building, originally built for an insurance company (1916).

Fire depot.

There are a lot of well-preserved eclectic and modern architecture in completely non-obvious alleys or dead ends, such as the manor of Myakinkov the merchant (now the wedding hall) on Pionerskaya street.

Next to it is the Institute of the Steppe.

"House with oriental motifs" on Kirov street.

Apartment house of P. Korobrov on Chicherin street.

The Bank of the Mutual Credit Society (now houses the Russian Central Bank branch office) on Leninskaya Street.

The building of a garage with a high relief of a car.

The former military storehouse on Parkovy avenue next to the caravanserai could have been mistaken for a construction of the 1960s-1980s, if not for the date on the facade.

I especially liked the house with mascarons on Krasnoarmeyskaya Street.

Basically, the buildings in the center are low-rise and modest.

As usual, one of the ugliest buildings in the city is the theater.

A time capsule from 2013 was laid at the caravanserai and to be opened in 2042. So, descendants, has visa-free entry into the EU already been introduced?

Getting in (as of Ocrober 2022): Orenburg aiport is 30 minutes drive from the city center. Be sure to book the taxi in advance when arriving on a evening flight.

Where to eat: The Pepel and Ogon' restaurant on Bukharskiy passage.

Where to stay: Hilton Garden Inn.
