Kushalino

 

Tver oblast is definitely not the richest region in Russia, but an old "entry is prohibited" road sign used as a manhole cover is miserable even by the standards of Tver oblast.

 

Kushalino has a prominent church of the Smolensk Icon of the Mother of God built in late 16th century by Simeon Bekbulatovich. He briefly served as a figurehead Czar of Russia during the Rule of Ivan the Terrible and in 1685 was sent into exile in Kushalino. English Wikipedia calls this place Kushalov but this is a clear mistake.

While the Smolensk temple functions somehow, the neighboring church of the Descent of the Holy Spirit (1842) is boarded up.

Getting in (as of June 2022): R-132 road from Tver towards Bezhetsk, take a turn left at the Arininskoye sign. Kushalino will be next after Rozhdestvo.
