Troitse-Gledensky Monastery

A former monastery opposite Veliky Ustyug in Vologda oblast. It was founded in 1650s on the place of the ancient Russian city of Gleden. From the outside, at first glance, the monastery is unremarkable. The Trinity Cathedral, was completed in 1701.

Two more monastery churches are abandoned.

A fence with one turret. It is not closed not because the walls have collapsed, but because there was not enough money for construction at the time.

View of Veliky Ustyug.

The most remarkable thing about this monastery is the huge carved baroque iconostasis in the cathedral, completed in 1784.

Royal Doors with the Evangelists.

Luke and Mark hold onto a cartouche depicting the Annunciation.

Sabaoth. Through the window below it you can see a dove in the altar.

Almost nothing remains of the rest of the wall paintings.

Crucifixion.

Other details.

Autograph of the authors on one of the icons. The craftsmen from Totma were invited to do the wood carving, but all the icon painters were merchants from Veliky Ustyug. For them it was a kind of hobby.

Getting in (as of August 2023): 20 minutes ride from Veliky Ustyug. Be aware that Trinity cathedral is open only during the warm months.
