A town in Nizhny Novgorod oblast. In two years since my previous visit the it has improved a lot. Kirova street became quite cozy.
The number of cast iron Arzamas geese has increased (the city is famous for the local breed).
It is now even on sewer manhole covers (together with Arzamas onions). And yes, this is not the town’s coat of arms.
In the center there are now all sorts of booths for drinking playing chess, historical information etc
Trade street after improvement. Previously, there was just a roadway and sidewalks without stairs. It turned out a little cumbersome.
The old buildings were painted and it became even more noticeable how they had been skewed over the centuries.
The Resurrection Cathedral.
And the square beneath.
Hidden in the block between Kommunistov, Kosmonavtov, Gorky and Vladimirsky streets is an Old Believer church, converted from a manger in the late 1990s.
Orthodox Chrisitan views.
Just views.
The younger generation of Arzamas cats.
New observation deck next to the cathedral.
From the observation deck there is a view of the village of Vyezdnoye and its Smolenskaya church. Last time I took photos of the Spanish-made Talgo "Strizh" train en route from St. Petersburg to Samara in front of this church. This rail service was permanently halted so one would never take a chance to take such photo again.
Getting there (as of November 2023): travel by M-12 tollway will take about 3.5 hours. The trains are less convenient, the ride will take 6 hours at best with convenient timetable.
Where to stay: the Reavil hotel on Kirova street is somewhat expensive but worth its price.
Where to eat: the Reavil restaurant or the Puri Khachapuri restauant to the north of the town center.
